Bradford’s population grew from 13,000 in 1801, 104,400 in 1851, and to 280,000 by 1901 - a faster growth rate than Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool or Manchester. The population of the city itself is now around 300,000 and of the District as a whole is now 467,665. In general the population of the District is now relatively stable with some losses in the white population being balanced by some growth amongst the Asian population who settled here in the sixties and seventies. This is in stark contrast to many other Northern cities who are struggling to maintain their increasing elderly population.
